Dear influencer who’s taking my joy away

Dear J,

I have been following you for a few years and I have seen how your brand has been growing. Congratulations. You have made a use of yourself without using your brain. People flocked around you all the time. You thought you were like expensive perfume, but you were looked at like a piece of meat. You rely on what you had a hold of when we were younger: popularity.

Growing up must have been easy for you. Using daddy’s credit card while putting credit to your hard work. Using the credit card to buy friends. What a joke. With the years, you have managed to sneak under big brands’ credit cards as well and that’s where you have reached your title. You rely on what you had a hold of when we were younger: money.

Title: Influencer.

The title I have wondered about for a long time. It has been like a vegetable on a child’s plate: been poked on, but never tried. The idea of influencers has grown the last couple of years and suddenly every little girl wanted to be a skinny, blonde, blue eyed French girl with short leather skirts, chuncky boots and knitted vests. The influence became negative.

Being surrounded by the search of perfection isn’t pretty. It makes me unpretty. It makes me the person no one sees despite good grades, being a polyglot and musically gifted. No one cares about what the book talks about as long as it portrays perfect condition.

Dear J,

You have given me courage to try. Try to go against you and your other friends who makes my mental health dead every day. I want to see if you are really living the happiest life out there, if you are really successful because of blonde hair and tagging all the brands on your pictures in the fitting room.

The idea is corrupt, but you have given me such a need to be a voice for people who no one cares about. I don’t want to see more people following you and never be happy. I want to be happy too, but the equation didn’t add up:

Increased social media influencers+ increased declined mental health = a corrupt world where half the people are getting paid for doing nothing and half the people kills themselves because they can’t be paid in vain

Thank you for taking my joy. Thank you for taking my life. Now I need to find it again by living yours, I guess.
